Apollo Beach, Florida is located directly on the coastline, which significantly increases its vulnerability to the impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms. Surrounded by large bodies of water, including Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, flooding and storm surge threats are considerable concerns. Furthermore, Apollo Beach has a generally low elevation which does not help mitigate these risks. Flooding is a foremost risk, particularly from high storm surge and torrential rainfall leading to flash floods. High wind speeds can cause significant structural damage to homes and businesses in the area, as well as knock out power and communication lines. The collection of debris from such wind can also pose an additional risk to public safety during a storm's aftermath. Historically, Apollo Beach has experienced notable hurricanes and storm-related floods. Over the past 30 years, Hurricane Irma in 2017 was particularly impactful: it passed near Apollo Beach as a Category 2 hurricane, causing significant flooding, wind damage, and power outages. In 2004, Hurricane Jeanne also affected Apollo Beach, despite not making landfall near the town, it still caused considerable amounts of damage through high winds and heavy rain. Due to changing climate patterns and rising sea levels, it is anticipated that future storms might cause even more extensive damage. Therefore, local authorities need to prioritize hurricane preparedness initiatives which include updating architecture designs, reinforcing existing structures, and effective community emergency response plans.
