About Lisbon.
Lisbon, Florida, being an inland town, has a slightly lower risk of direct impacts from hurricanes than coastal areas. However, given Florida's peninsular structure, no place is far from the coast. Hurricanes can certainly reach far inland, bringing strong winds, loss of power, and heavy rainfall. Lisbon’s fairly low elevation makes it susceptible to flooding, particularly from the heavy rainfall associated with tropical systems. Moreover, hurricanes do not have to make a direct landfall in or near Lisbon to have a significant impact on the town. High winds can down trees and power lines, causing significant power outages and damage, while heavy rain can flood roads, properties, and even whole neighborhoods. Historically, several major hurricanes have impacted Lisbon in the past 30 years, although none have caused catastrophic damage. For instance, Hurricane Andrew (1992) and the trio of storms during the 2004 season: Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, led to significant rain, wind and even some flooding in Lisbon. Such events reinforce the need for residents to heed evacuation orders, have a hurricane preparedness plan, and ensure their homes and properties are insured against flood damage. Regardless of direct landfall, hurricanes and flooding remain a significant concern for Lisbon, Florida.
