Viera West, Florida, located in Brevard County, is situated approximately 9-11 miles from the Atlantic coast. Given the town's flat elevation, it is highly vulnerable to flooding even at that distance from the shoreline. Its inland location protects it to some extent from the initial, direct impacts of hurricanes such as storm surge; however, the town tends to experience significant rainfall during such events. This, combined with the relatively flat topography, places Viera West at an elevated risk for both flash floods and longer-lasting area floods. This is particularly true in areas with poor drainage, of which there are several in and around the community.
Reviewing recent history, a few major hurricanes have caused significant impact to the area in the last 30 years. Notable are hurricanes Jeanne and Frances in 2004, and hurricane Irma in 2017. While none of these hurricanes made direct landfall in Viera West, their broad wind fields and heavy rainfall created considerable damage in the area. In all these cases, the most widespread problems were linked to heavy rainfall leading to flooding. Given the rise in frequency and intensity of hurricane events in recent years due to climate change, continued vigilance and emphasis on flood-preparedness is recommended.
