About Thonotosassa.
Thonotosassa, Florida, is located in Hillsborough County, about 20 miles inland from the Gulf Coast. While this distance from the coast may offer some protection from the immediate impact of storm surges, the town is still susceptible to high winds and excessive rainfall triggered by hurricanes moving inland. The location does not seem to be at particular risk from the standpoint of elevation related issues, as it ranges from 20 to 50 feet above sea level. However, the region has a history of notable flooding risks, particularly during heavy rain events, as the relatively flat topography can cause water to accumulate and not drain as rapidly. Instances of flash flooding during significant storm events could pose threats to Thonotosassa's infrastructure, the residents, and local wildlife. Historically, numerous hurricanes and major storms have affected this area in the past several decades. The passage of Hurricane Elena in 1985 and Hurricane Irma in 2017, despite their tracks being somewhat distant, brought fierce winds and torrential rains to the area, causing limited flooding but significant damage due to fallen trees and power outages. Moreover, these hurricane impacts were not isolated instances, as periodic heavy rain bands from tropical systems frequently cause localized flash flooding. Additionally, Thonotosassa lies close to the Hillsborough River, which can also contribute to flooding in the town during heavy rainfall events, especially if they coincide with periods of high tide. Whenever a storm is approaching, residents should be prepared to evacuate if necessary and take measures to secure their properties.
