Plantation Island, Florida, located in close proximity to the southwestern coast of the state, is vulnerable to hurricanes and floods due to its low elevation and position surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Atkins Bayou, and other water bodies. Its location and generally flat topography present significant hurricane-related risks, including high wind speeds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, and other water- and wind-related threats. As a result of these factors, there is considerable flood risk, especially considering climate change-associated sea level rise which can exacerbate these impacts. Looking at historical events, hurricanes have periodically caused significant damage in Plantation Island. One of the most impactful storms was Hurricane Irma in 2017, which led to widespread flooding and property damage. Andrew in 1992 also left an indelible mark on the area. Yet, perhaps the greatest flood-related event occurred during the 2005 hurricane season with Hurricane Wilma. The associated storm surge coupled with substantial rainfall led to notable flooding. These past incidents are instrumental in formulating preventative measures and for city planning to mitigate future hurricane risks.
