About Coral Springs.

Local context for the zone
Coral Springs, Florida is located approximately 10 miles from the East Coast, which does put it in the threat zone for possible hurricanes. Being less than 30 feet above sea level, flooding due to excessive rain or storm surge may be an issue, mostly in low-lying areas. Curry Hammock State Park, which is within the area, could also contribute to dampening the area during extreme weather events. While the city's distance from the coast minimizes the risk of direct hurricane hits or storm surges, the surrounding bodies of water, including the Everglades, mean the area may still experience significant rainfall and potential flooding. Looking at the historical hurricane records, Coral Springs has received its share of hurricane threats. For instance, in 1992, Hurricane Andrew inflicted heavy damages in South Florida, although Coral Springs was outside of the main impact zone and thus was spared the harshest impacts. More recently, in 2005, Hurricane Wilma, produced significant wind damage to many homes and commercial buildings, as well as extensive power outages. The high vulnerability to wind damage is mainly due to building design and the abundance of trees and other projectiles within the city. Flooding is not a significant issue in most areas, owing to the generally effective local drainage systems; however, during periods of heavy rainfall, some localized street flooding may be expected.
