About Westview.
Westview, Florida, situated only a few miles inland from the Atlantic coastline, is particularly susceptible to meteorological hazards mainly associated with Atlantic hurricane activity. Its proximity to the coast often subjects it to the direct impact of the hurricane-generated storm surges, winds, and torrential rainfall. Due to Florida's generally low elevation, Westview is not exempted from the extensive flooding triggered by the heavy rains, even though its elevation is slightly higher compared to other parts of the state. Consolidating the elevation factor with Westview's overwhelmed drainage system and its location on the southern tip of Florida, the town is always in line for significant flood risks during hurricane events. Looking back over the past 30 years, Westview has experienced numerous hurricanes and floods. One of the most significant was Hurricane Andrew in 1992 that led to substantial property damage and loss of life. More recently, Hurricanes Irma in 2017, and Isaias in 2020, also impacted the town tremendously, leading to flooding and considerable damage. While direct hits by hurricanes have been somewhat infrequent, their indirect effects and the influence of other tropical depressions and disturbances on rainfall levels have contributed to a heightened flood risk for Westview. Therefore, any hurricane potential in this region should be given significant attention and prompt action for preparedness measures.
