About Union Park.
Union Park, Florida, is situated inland from the eastern coast of the state with a distance of approximately 40 miles, which provides some cushion against the direct impact of a hurricane's storm surge. However, it is still at risk for heavy rainfall, high-speed winds, and tornadoes that can be produced by a strong hurricane. Central Florida, including Union Park, features mostly flat terrain, so there isn't significant elevation to reduce potential flooding. Although not directly on the coastline, it is still vulnerable to flooding caused by heavy rainfall during a hurricane, particularly for properties near water bodies. The region's vulnerability to flooding is furthermore heightened by its largely impermeable surfaces due to urbanization that inhibit water absorption into the ground, which can result in surface water runoff and accumulation. Looking at the records for the past 30 years, Union Park has been subject to several notable hurricanes and flooding events. It was indirectly impacted by the devastating Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and more recently, Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne in 2004. Each of these storms brought large volumes of precipitation leading to flooding and significant wind damage. Additionally, Union Park experienced the effects of Hurricanes Irma in 2017 and Matthew in 2016, both of which caused extensive water and wind damage in Central Florida. Therefore, although Union Park is not on the immediate coastline, residents should remain vigilant and prepared for potential hurricane threats.
