About Odessa.
Odessa, Florida, situated in Pasco County, is in close proximity to the Gulf Coast and thereby susceptible to the threats posed by hurricanes. Despite its inland location of approximately 15 miles, the town is still under danger of storm surge, high-intensity winds, heavy rainfall and flooding. These threats worsen in a hurricane situation due to the town's relatively low elevation, at most just below 50 feet above sea level, which makes it prone to flooding. The region around Odessa is peppered with multiple lakes and water bodies, which can overflow during substantial rain events, increasing the risk further. Historically, Odessa has been in the path of major hurricanes and tropical storms that have wreaked havoc on the Sunshine State. Hurricane Irma in 2017 had a significant impact, causing flooding, wind damage and power outages in Odessa. Prior to that, the town was profoundly affected by the no-name storm in March 1993, often referred to as the "Storm of the Century". This storm caused severe coastal flooding along the western Gulf coast of Florida, which included areas like Odessa. Adapting to these risks includes a comprehensive preparedness plan that incorporates evacuation strategies, infrastructure fortification and efficient warning and communication systems.
