Rainbow Springs, being located in central Florida and around 60 miles from the Gulf Coast, is relatively sheltered from the immediate coast-related impacts of a hurricane like storm surges and damaging coastal winds. However, residents should remain vigilant regarding the major hurricane threats such as torrential rain, flooding, and inland wind damage. Despite having a slightly elevated terrain, the heavy rain brought on by hurricanes can cause flash flooding due to the area's river system. Consequently, the Rainbow River and its tributaries may overflow and inundate residential areas and critical infrastructures such as transportation routes. The hurricane history of Rainbow Springs shows that it has been indirectly affected by several major storms over the past three decades. For instance, Hurricane Irma in 2017, though it made landfall south of the area, brought heavy rain and strong winds that led to localized flooding and power outages. Previously, 2004 was a remarkable year, with Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne causing substantial rainfall and associated flooding in central Florida. Altogether, the residents of Rainbow Springs need to be prepared for heavy rain, flooding, and powerful winds during hurricane season and consider necessary mitigation actions such as flood barriers for properties and insurance coverage.
