Wahneta, Florida is located about 50 miles inland from the Gulf Coast. Its location away from the sea’s immediate fringe does offer some degree of protection against the direct effects of hurricanes that come ashore. However, this should in no way downplay the potential dangers. Even inland areas such as Wahneta can be subject to heavy rain, high winds, and tornado activity spawned by hurricanes and tropical storms. It is prudent to consider the potential for flooding given that Wahneta’s elevation is generally less than 150 feet, therefore, even a non-direct hit from a hurricane can lead to significant rainfall and potential flash flooding. Looking back over weather history, Hurricane Irma in 2017 had an extensive impact on Wahneta, causing devastating wind damage and moderate flooding. The infamous 2004 hurricane season, which included Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, all passed close enough to bring Wahneta heavy rain and wind, resulting in property damage and flooding. Given this historical data, Wahneta's vulnerability to hurricanes and consequent rainfall-induced flooding is clear. Residents should always adhere to warnings and evacuation notices for their safety during the hurricane season.
