Hutchinson Island South, Florida is an area that is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of hurricanes and extreme weather events, largely due to its coastal location and low elevation. As a barrier island, its geographic position makes it a first point of contact for incoming hurricanes. The widespread storm surge brought on by hurricanes, coupled with the low-lying terrain of the area significantly increases its potential for flooding. In fact, the island is considered to have a high flood risk, with a significant portion of the area situated in a designated FEMA flood zone. In terms of historical hurricanes, Hutchinson Island South has not been spared. Most notably, hurricanes Jeanne and Frances in 2004 inflicted devastating damage to the area only weeks apart. Additionally, Hurricane Irma in 2017 brushed the island causing massive flooding and damaging properties. Considering these historical events and the geographic characteristics of Hutchinson Island South, it is critical for residents and officials to remain vigilant during hurricane season, have evacuation plans in place and ensure infrastructures are able to withstand strong winds and floodwaters.
