Mulberry, Florida, despite being positioned approximately 60 miles inland from the nearest coastline, is not immune to the impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms. This location within Polk County offers some protection from initial storm surge threats that coastal regions commonly face. However, such storms carry with them heavy rainfall and strong winds that can reach far inland, making the town still vulnerable to significant damage. Mulberry's landscape is also relatively flat, at an average elevation of just under 200 feet, which can lead to increased flood risks when high amounts of rainfall common in hurricanes are involved. A look at the weather history reveals that Mulberry has felt the impacts of very destructive hurricanes in the last three decades. In 2004, three powerful hurricanes, Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, crossed through or near Polk County, of which Mulberry is a part. Hurricane Irma in 2017 also significantly impacted Polk County, with widespread power outages and flood damages. These massive storms brought substantial rainfall resulting in flooding, as well as strong winds causing property damage and power outages. Thus, while Mulberry's inland location limits the effect of storm surge, hurricane threat assessments must still consider heavy rainfall, high winds, and subsequent flooding as potential significant impacts.
