Silver Lake, Florida, although somewhat shielded by being located inland in Lake County, must still take into account the potential impact of seasonal hurricanes. The town's location, approximately 50 miles from the Atlantic coast and 75 miles from the Gulf coast, doesn't spare it from the reach of disastrous weather systems. However, the elevated terrain in this part of Florida offers a level of protection from storm surge flooding, which is more of a threat to coastal regions; nevertheless, the risk of flash floods from heavy rainfalls, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes during significant hurricanes still exists. Looking at the weather history, Silver Lake was near the path of Hurricane Donna in 1960 and more recently, has seen substantial impacts from the 2004 hurricane season; hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne all passed near or over the region, causing severe damage. More recently, Hurricane Irma in 2017 provided a considerable amount of rainfall, causing heavy flooding in less elevated regions. As such, preparedness for high winds, heavy rain resulting in flash and river flooding, and tornadoes should be a consideration for residents could be highly advisable.
