Its relatively low elevation (approximately 174 feet above sea level) heightens its risk for flash flooding and standing water following heavy rainfall. Please keep in mind that significant wind damage could cause electricity and water supply disruptions, falling trees, and flying debris, potentially putting lives at risk and damaging property. Over the past thirty years, the city has been in the direct pathway of hurricanes and tropical storms, with some leading to significant damage. The most impactful on Gretna was Hurricane Michael in October 2018, a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 161 mph. The aftermath left vast areas without power and resulted in substantial structural damage. Hurricane Hermine in 2016 and Tropical Storm Fay in 2008 also brought heavy rains and strong winds to Gretna.
