Sugar Grove, Virginia, is situated quite a considerable distance from the Atlantic coast and, thus, may not immediately feel the full strength of a hurricane making landfall. However, remnants of such storms, characterized by periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds, can create significant impacts inland, such as in areas like Sugar Grove. The town sits at an elevation of about 2500 feet, which would not typically be prone to storm surge impacts, but heavy continuous rain could still lead to localized flooding. Properties on or near watercourses and low-lying regions are potentially more susceptible to these flood risks. Looking at the historical flood risk and hurricane impacts over the past thirty years, a few notable events stand out. Hurricane Fran in 1996 affected a broad swath of Virginia, creating significant rainfall and resultant flooding, even in inland locations like Sugar Grove. Also, the remnants of Hurricane Isabel in 2003 brought similar impacts. In 2018, Hurricane Florence's remnants also peppered the region with heavy rain causing both local and widespread flooding. It's critical for residents to be prepared for flooding secondary to a hurricane, in addition to potential wind damage, power disruptions, and road closures due to downed trees or flooding.
