About Rich Creek.
Rich Creek, Virginia, is a town located approximately 250 miles inland from the Virginia coast. Despite its considerable distance from the coast, Rich Creek is not immune to the potential impacts of hurricanes, particularly in the form of heavy rain and flooding. Although the town's elevation averages about 2,080 feet, reducing the risk of storm surge impacts from hurricanes, the area is nonetheless vulnerable to flooding from an excess of rain. Hurricanes and tropical storms moving inland can bring tremendous amounts of precipitation, increasing the hazard of flash flooding in local rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas. Historically, Rich Creek has experienced the effects of several notable weather events. Particularly, in 1985, remnants of Hurricane Juan led to severe flooding in Giles County where the town is located. More recently, in 2018, the town was impacted by substantial rainfall related to Hurricane Florence which resulted in flooding, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency in the region. Though direct hits from a hurricane are less likely given Rich Creek's inland location, residents should remain vigilant during hurricane season as the threat of heavy rain, potential flooding, and related impacts can pose a significant risk for the area.
