Ewing, Virginia, situated in the far western part of the state, is relatively insulated from the direct landfall of hurricanes due to its significant distance from both the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. However, it is not entirely immune to the impacts of these severe weather systems. Hurricanes that track inland can still affect Ewing with peripheral effects such as high winds, heavy rainfall, or tornado spin-offs, although these effects tend to be less severe than coastal regions. Being nestled at the base of a mountain, Ewing does face the risk of flash flooding due to heavy rain, which could lead to property damage and blocked roads. To date, Ewing, VA, has not directly witnessed any major hurricanes in the last 30 years. However, remnants of Hurricane Fran in 1996 caused heavy rains and resulting floods across Virginia and could have had impacts on Ewing. Furthermore, a more recent example would be the residual damages inflicted by Hurricane Florence in 2018. The prime concern for Ewing would be the potential for flooding from remnants of a hurricane, especially when the town's proximity to Powell River is considered. Thus, despite its inland location, Ewing's residents still need to be prepared and aware during the hurricane season.
