Culpeper, Virginia, being located approximately 75 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, is not directly impacted by hurricane storm surges; however, it remains susceptible to other severe weather aspects associated with hurricanes, such as high winds, heavy rains, and tornadoes. Based on the town's elevation, which is roughly 413 feet above sea level, and its substantial distance from the coast, storm surge and coastal flooding are less likely to affect Culpeper directly. However, the heavy rainfall that accompanies these hurricanes can still cause significant inland flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage or along the banks of the Hazel River which cuts through the town. Looking back at the last 30 years, the most notable hurricane that affected Culperper was Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The category 2 hurricane produced torrential rainfall in Virginia causing massive flooding, and even though its most severe impacts were felt at the coastal region, Culpeper did experience the fallout from the storm with disrupted utilities and some localized flooding. Despite this, it is important to note that although hurricanes might not hit directly, their residual effects can still present a hazard to the town. Therefore, preparedness measures like maintenance of drainage systems, securing loose outdoor items, and developing an evacuation plan are important, especially during the Atlantic hurricane season.
