About Fredericksburg.
Fredericksburg, located approximately 60 miles from the Virginia coast, is not directly susceptible to storm surges from hurricanes, however, the impact of high rainfall volume frequently resulting from hurricanes present various risks. Flooding is the primary hazard due to the town's proximity to the Rappahannock River and lower elevation areas. Hurricanes can bring intense and extended periods of rainfall which drastically elevate the risk of flooding in these parts of Fredericksburg. The town has also experienced wind damage from severe hurricanes due to strong winds and falling trees. Arduous rain from Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Camille in 1969 led to substantial flooding in Fredericksburg, which resulted in significant property damage. More recently, the remnants of Hurricane Isabel in 2003 also had a severe impact on this region, causing loss of power, property damage due to high winds, and flooding. It should be noted that the potential for damage from future hurricanes and associated heavy rainfall remains a significant risk. Additionally, hurricanes typically lead to considerable interruptions to services, power outages, and disruptions to transportation networks in the region.
