Being located about 250 miles from the Atlantic coast, Hiwassee, Virginia, is generally shielded from the worst effects of coastal hurricanes. The region, however, does not escape the risks of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and even tornadoes, which can be byproducts of even distant hurricanes. The elevation in this region ranges significantly, but for most parts, it's over 1500 feet, which can help minimize the risks of storm surge. However, the town might still be subjected to localized flooding if it experiences prolonged heavy rain, given the potential for river overflow and/or poor drainage in specific areas. High winds are another concern, which can often cause structural damage and power outage. Historically, Hiwassee did experience significant impacts from hurricanes and floods in the last three decades. Notably, Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Isabel in 2003 caused substantial damage in terms of power outages and flooding. Also, extreme flooding in 1985 and 1995, the result of other major weather systems, greatly impacted the community. Thus, while the town’s inland position and high elevation somewhat protect it from direct hurricane impacts, it remains vulnerable to secondary damaging effects like flash flooding and strong winds. It remains important for residents to pay close attention to weather warnings during hurricane season.
