Glen Lyn, located in the far southwestern portion of Virginia, is fairly distant from the Eastern seaboard which presents a first line of defense against the harshest impacts of hurricanes typically experienced in coastal regions. This distance from the coast, however, does not make them immune to experiencing the effects of these systems, particularly from remnant tropical cyclones. One significant threat Glen Lyn faces is from heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding. Given its proximity to the New River and a significant elevation range within the town, heavy persistent rainfall can lead to rapid inundation of low-lying areas and minor landslides cannot be ruled out. Over the past three decades, Glen Lyn has thankfully been spared direct hits from major hurricanes. But, there have been incidents of heavy rainfall causing minor to moderate floods in the town. One of the most recent impactful events occurred in 2018 when remnants of Hurricane Florence swept the region causing substantial rainfall. In addition, the almost landlocked location within the Appalachian mountains makes them susceptible to post-hurricane effects such as heavy rainfall coupled with forceful winds. Hence, residents must always stay prepared and heed evacuation warnings as necessary. It's also essential to keep tabs on local weather forecasts during hurricane season to stay informed of potential threats.
