Glen Lyn, located in the far southwestern portion of Virginia, is fairly distant from the Eastern seaboard which presents a first line of defense against the harshest impacts of hurricanes typically experienced in coastal regions. This distance from the coast, however, does not make them immune to experiencing the effects of these systems, particularly from remnant tropical cyclones. One significant threat Glen Lyn faces is from heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding. Given its proximity to the New River and a significant elevation range within the town, heavy persistent rainfall can lead to rapid inundation of low-lying areas and minor landslides cannot be ruled out.
