Potomac Mills, Virginia, is relatively distant from the coastal area making it less susceptible to the direct initial impact of a hurricanes like storm surge; however, this does not mean that the region is immune from the effects of tropical storms and hurricanes. Potomac Mills' position places it at substantial threat from inland flooding and high winds due to hurricanes, and the town's proximity to the Potomac River increases the risk of riverine flooding. The elevation of Potomac Mills is generally low-lying, which means that rain-induced flooding from hurricane rainfall could pose a significant threat. Persistent heavy rainfall from a slow-moving or stationary hurricane could lead to severe flooding. Taking history into account, Hurricane Isabel in 2003 was a significant event for Potomac Mills, causing strong winds and rainfall that lead to extensive power outages and flooding. 2011's Hurricane Irene also caused heavy rainfall, resulting in significant flooding around this area. More recently, in 2018, the remnants of Hurricane Florence brought heavy rain and flash flood threats to the area. Therefore, while the town's inland location does give some protection against hurricanes relative to coastal areas, residents still need to prepare for strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding when hurricane threats are present.
