The low elevation in and around Temple Terrace, paired with an elevated likelihood of heavy rainfall during a hurricane, can lead to flooding. A historical example of devastating hurricane impacts in Temple Terrace is the event of Hurricane Irma in 2017. Despite weakening to a Category 2 by the time it made its way to this part of the state, Irma was still able to cause substantial damage from winds and rain-induced flooding. Flooding is often exacerbated in Temple Terrace due to the town's dependency on the Hillsborough River and other local bodies of water. In fact, the river overflowed its banks during 2004's Hurricane Frances, leading to significant localized flooding. This indicates that Temple Terrace is prone to both fluvial and pluvial flooding, suggesting any future hurricanes could pose similar or even greater risks, especially considering potential impacts of climate change. For instance, more intense hurricanes and higher rainfall events could increase flood risks. The continued growth and development in the area might also play a role in escalating flood risks in the future.
