About Crozet.
Crozet, Virginia, is located approximately 140 miles from the coast, which significantly decreases the direct impact of a hurricane's storm surge. However, the town, at an elevation of 810 ft., remains potentially susceptible to inland hazards such as extreme wind and heavy rainfall, which could in turn lead to flooding, especially in low-lying areas. The heavy rainfall associated with a slow-moving tropical system could result in extensive flooding. In terms of historical flood risk, Crozet experiences less flooding compared to the more hurricane-prone coastal regions, but the town is not immune to flash flooding associated with excessive rain events. Within the past 30 years, the most memorable hurricane related weather event was brought about by remnants of Hurricane Camille in 1969 which lead to catastrophic flash floods in the region. More recently, while Hurricane Sandy (2012) primarily impacted the northeastern United States, the outer fringes of the storm did impact parts of Virginia causing widespread power outages, some flooding, and downed trees across the area. Therefore, Crozet's primary concern relating to hurricanes is the heavy rain and potential flooding associated with decaying tropical systems. Infrastructure and disaster preparation should focus on rainfall management and services to prepare for power outages and road blockages.
